The book collects selected contributions from the past three editions of the event, and it has been produced under a memorandum of understanding between JRC and ENEA

Speakers

Dr. Heinz Ossenbrink, born in 1951, has a PhD in Nuclear Physics from Hahn Meitner Institute, Berlin and joined the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in 1982. He built up the JRC’s activity on Photovoltaics when Europe started its research and pilot programme for Photovoltaic systems. In 1995 he became Head of the Unit for Renewable Energy, and expanded research and support activities to Energy Efficiency and Bio-Energy, notably Biofuels. His work is dedicated to the scientific support of EU legislation for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency. More recently, he is developing the unit’s portfolio to support Africa’s efforts for a renewable energy supply.
Since 1982 he is contributing to the standards work of the IEC TC82, Solar Photovoltaic Systems, in particular regarding calibration of reference cells and lifetime testing of PV modules. His many publications cover measurement and testing methods for photovoltaic generators, economic assessment of renewable energy and global environmental impacts of extended bio-fuel use.
From 1995 he has been serving as Programme Chair of the prestigious series of European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conferences and in 2005 he commenced and still continues his term assisting the Programme Chair of the prestigious series of European Biomass Conferences.
He lives on the shores of Lake Maggiore in northern Italy where he practices sailing and skiing, and is deeply interested in global sustainability issues.

Architect, PhD in Technologies for Architecture and Environment. Since 2000 she works as researcher at ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development), Photovoltaic Technologies Area (www.enea.it). Her main interest is working on the hybrid border between scientific research and design, to create a domain of common understanding and possibilities for experimentations in the real living environment.
Her main fields of activity are: Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), Landscape Integrated Photovoltaics (LIPV), Net Zero Energy Buildings and Smart Cities.
She writes papers, she collaborates with the architectural magazine Domus, she patented innovative photovoltaic components for buildings and the urban environment, she edited books, and she participates and organize several scientific events and conferences. After having worked at the architectural scale, since 2007 she investigates the topic Energy-Landscapes, with a special focus on Photovoltaics and agricultural greenhouses.
She is a teacher at the Italian National Institute of Architecture for a post graduate master “Designer of sustainable architectures”. She is involved in European Project aiming at the development of special photovoltaic components for buildings. She is also involved in several IEA (International Energy Agency) research groups. In particular: 2008-2012 IEA SHC Task 41 “Solar Energy and Architecture”; 2008-2013 IEA SHC-EBC, Task 40-Annex 52 “Towards Net Zero Energy Solar Buildings”, 2013-2017 IEA SHC Task 51 “Solar Energy in Urban Planning”.

Robert FERRY, is the founding co-director of the Land Art Generator Initiative and Studied Impact Design. His consulting work is focused on the design of net-zero and net-positive environments that achieve complete harmony with their local and global environments and with the people who use them. He has contributed to many high-profile green building projects around the world and his design work has been featured in Popular Science Magazine and other publications.

Elizabeth MONOIAN is the founder and director of Society for Cultural Exchange, a non-profit organization that is developing international exchanges between communities, academics, and artists. Under SCE she is the founding co-director of the Land Art Generator Initiative, which has been featured in numerous international press outlets, including The New York Times and Dwell Magazine. Elizabeth is an interdisciplinary artist and designer whose work has been screened and exhibited in venues throughout Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. She received an MFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2000.

The Land Art Generator Initiative

The main goal of the Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) is to design and construct public art installations that have the added benefit of utility-scale clean energy generation. Each sculpture will continuously distribute clean energy into the electrical grid, with each having the potential to provide power to thousands of homes.
LAGI has held three international design competitions—United Arab Emirates, New York City, and Copenhagen—inviting interdisciplinary teams from around the world to conceive of the aesthetic integration of renewable energy infrastructure into our urban landscapes.

Walter Hood, Master of Fine Arts, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, 2010, M.L.A and M.Arch, University of California, Berkeley, B.L.A., University of California is an artist, designer and educator.
He is professor of Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning and Urban Design. In his teaching and practice he is committed to the development of environments which reflect their place and time specifically through how people inhabit various geographies.
Hood Design  is a cultural practice committed to creating environments in which people live work and play. The studio practice engages urban landscape where a collective density of inhabitants share physical, social, political and economic resources. This multidimensional context is the setting for the development of powerful sculpted expressions that explore site specific social and environmental processes. Landscapes and built elements emerge as improvised acts, familiar yet reshaped into something new.

Thomas Nordmann is working for solar energy for 40 years by now:
1974 he was working in the development, research and conversion of thermals and later photovoltaic applications in the government research (Paul Scherrer Institute) and for the Swiss energy industry.
In 1985 Nordmann founded his own enterprise named «TNC Consulting AG»
He developed and built the world’s first 100 kW PV noise barrier installation along a Swiss motorway (1989) and has since planned, engineered and installed a total PV-capacity of approx. 3 MWp in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, and Luxemburg.
He was president of the Swiss Solar Industry Association (SOFAS) from 1992-1999 and vice-president of the Swiss national organisation «Swissolar» till March 2002.
For his contribution to the development of solar energy he received three times the Swiss solar price (1994, 1998 and 1999) and the European solar price (1997). At the 3rd PV world conference Osaka in May 2003 he received the paper award for the best presentation/paper in section 7 national strategies and policy of PV. He was an invited keynote speaker at all PV world conference.
Since 2004 Nordmann and his Company are Swiss Expert in PVPS Task 2 now Task 13 for Performance and Reliability of Photovoltaic Systems.
Thomas Nordmann has published more than 110 Papers and publications in his career since 1974. He was Chairman of the PV Symposium Staffelstein/Germany 2008 and 2013.

Alessia Perego has managed researches on the following topics: (i) Modelling of maize, winter wheat, and hemp biomass dynamics and crop growth at field scale scales, focusing on photosynthesis process under different patterns of shading; (ii) Model based assessment of land use and management strategies to minimize the impact on the agro-ecosystem, together with the increasing nitrogen and water use efficiency; (iii) Model based evaluation of climate change impact on crop growth and soil processes and development of adaptation strategies.

Sergio Praderio is the Chief Financial Officer and a member of the board of directors of REM Revolution Energy Maker Spa. He has twenty-five years of finance and business management experience gained working for multinational companies, in Italy and abroad. He joined REM Spa in 2011. Prior to that, in his capacity as Executive President for an Italian multi-utility company, he was the project sponsor appointed by a municipality to join the Covenant of Mayor and define new sustainable energy policies.
REM Spa was founded by a group of Italian businessmen, at the end of 1998, to implement innovative solutions for the production of energy from renewable sources: the so-called Agrovoltaico®, a new technology whose patent is registered worldwide. It is based on the concept of “solar sharing”, to allow full compatibility of clean energy production with agricultural activities.

Lawrence Scarpa has garnered international acclaim for the creative use of conventional materials in unique and unexpected ways. He is also considered a pioneer and leader in the field of sustainable design.
Over the last ten years, Mr. Scarpa’s firm BROOKS + SCARPA received more than 50 major design awards, including nineteen National AIA Awards, Record Houses, Record Interiors, the Rudy Bruner Prize, five AIA Committee on the Environment “Top Ten Green Building” Awards and the World Habitat Award, one of ten firms selected worldwide. He has also received the lifetime achievement award from Interior Design Magazine. In 2010, his firm Brooks + Scarpa (formerly Pugh + Scarpa) was awarded the State of California and National American Institute of Architects Architecture Firm Award.
Mr. Scarpa’s work has been featured in numerous publications and has been exhibited in venues such as MOCA Los Angeles, The National Building Museum and the Gwanju Bienale.  Mr. Scarpa has also appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
He has taught and lectured at the university level for more than two decades.  Some of those institutions include Harvard University, UCLA, SCI-arc, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Florida, University of Michigan, University of Southern California and the University of California at Berkeley.  He is a co-founder of the Affordable Housing Design Leadership Institute Livable Places, Inc.; a nonprofit development and public policy organization dedicated to building mixed-use housing and to help develop more sustainable and livable communities.

Sven Stremke is Assistant Professor of Landscape Architecture at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. His research focuses on sustainable landscapes with special attention to renewable energy. In 2012, Sven Stremke and Renée de Waal launched the NRGlab, a laboratory devoted to the research and design of sustainable energy landscapes. Before enrolling to his Master study, Sven worked as a freelance landscape architect both in the United States and in Germany. After graduating from Anhalt University, Sven started working with Soler Morató Architects in Barcelona. Soon after moving to Spain, he was offered a position at the Landscape Architecture chair group at Wageningen University. Having the chance to conduct his doctoral research in the Netherlands, Sven started working for Wageningen University and joined the WIMEK research school in the summer of 2006. In his doctoral research, he studied sustainable landscapes with a special focus on the regional scale and energy. Between 2006 and 2010, Sven collaborated with researchers from three Dutch Universities in a project entitled ‘Synergies between Regional Planning and Exergy’. In October 2010, Sven defended his PhD thesis: ‘Designing Sustainable Energy Landscapes: Concepts, Principles and Procedures’. The objective of his dissertation was to advance the planning and design of sustainable landscapes. The thesis discussed science-based design concepts (substantive knowledge) and means to organize the design process (procedural knowledge). Over the past years, Sven has had the opportunity to present and discuss his research at various occasions in the Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland, South Africa, China, Brazil, Germany, and Sweden. All of his research is published in scientific papers. Together with Andy van den Dobbelsteen he edited the book ‘Sustainable Energy Landscapes: Designing, Planning and Development’ published by CRC/Taylor & Francis in 2012.
